Masala Dosa
Masala Dosa at Udupiwala reminds you of the kind of dosas that you get in Bangalore – thick, soft and cripsy. The potato sabji inside the dosa is simple and quite authentic – mashed potatoes with curry leaves and chana/udad dal tadka. All items are served with 2 types of chutney – coconut chutney and tomato onion chutney, both of which are quite flavourful. Coconut chutney is thick and freshly made. Sambhar is flavourful with masalas similar to one that you get in Karnataka. We also tried idli/wada and they were also good. The only flip side is the cost – Masala dosa at ~ Rs 200/- does pinch your pocket a bit. But the taste justifies the cost as there are not too many places in Uttarahand where you get authentic south indian cuisine. Be sure to stop by on your way from Haldwani/Kathgodam to Nainital (& other tourist places in Kumaon) if you like south indian food as you would not get such authentic south indian cuisine anywhere in Uttarakhand.
Restaurant Description
Located in Ranibagh - Haldwani Road, near to Kathgodam, Udupiwala is one of the very few restaurants in Uttarakhand which provides authentic south indian menu. The taste of dosas/idli/wada is more like Bangalore, the reason being that the owner of the restaurant - Mr. Joseph Rodrigues belongs to Karnataka. From a small shop set up in 1999, Udupiwala has now expanded to multiple big joints across Uttarakhand through their franchise model.
