This is probably the only thela serving Moradabadi daal in Dehradun. You have the option of taking it either in kulhad (earthen pot) or dona (cup made from dired leaves).
Originating from the vibrant streets of Moradabad and named after Prince Murad Baksh, Shah Jahan’s son, this dish is supposed to be accidentally created by a cook in Moradabad. Is it a chat or a dal ?? Probably both, since it is cooked like daal and served like chat. It is a stand alone dish and served as snack on special occasiosions like marriage in Uttar Pradesh. Moong dal is cooked for slightly more time than normal and mashed completely till it becomes like a thick paste. It is then cooked again in butter in low flame to make it more creamy and flavourful. It is then served with toppings of fresh lime juice, masala powder (which is mainly bhuna jeera and some other spices), sliced green chillies, chutney, ginger julienne and crushed papdi. Because of less oil used in its preparation and no frying involved, it is considered a very healthy snack item.
